According to various reports, Trump is preparing to carry out additional strikes to declare an American \u201cvictory\u201d; this time, with his eyes on the luxurious Cuban cigar that, though he may not know how to smoke, is certainly able to light.<\/p>\n
Cuba is a land of wide-brimmed hats, of Santa Maria del Mar churches, and of sugarcane plantations. Some believe Cuba could be the next target for the U.S. administration in light of threats that have begun to escalate against the current Cuban government. Others, however, see Cuba as a distraction, for now, arguing that the United States wants to shape global public opinion by implying that it is stepping away from Iran, while in reality it is preparing to attack Iran to proclaim victory.<\/p>\n
In any case, fears of a U.S. invasion of Cuba are supported by developments on the ground. Since May, the U.S. Navy has deployed an aircraft carrier near Cuba\u2019s coasts. The United States has also imposed additional sanctions on Cuban leaders, and federal prosecutors have issued an indictment against the former Cuban president, Ra\u00fal Castro. Although an American delegation led by the Director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, John Ratcliffe, traveled to Havana on May 14 in a rare visit, understanding still appears distant between the current U.S. administration and Cuba\u2019s current government. According to information available, U.S. officials have demanded a comprehensive overhaul of Cuba\u2019s economy and of the political system based on a one-party model. Yet behind these publicly stated reasons, there are other motives that have not been disclosed to the media or reported by news agencies.<\/p>\n
These steps come after a long U.S. oil embargo against Cuba. That embargo triggered an energy crisis that plunged Cuba into darkness, with the Cuban people receiving only a few hours of electricity per day. It has also left hospitals lacking the power necessary to operate life-support and ventilator machines. In a dialogue session on \u201ccoercive measures\u201d and the right to development, held on May 20 as part of the work of the 27th session of the International Governmental Working Group on Development, Cuba\u2019s Deputy Permanent Representative, Rebeca Hern\u00e1ndez, stated that Cuba is a victim of an unlawful economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States for nearly 70 years.<\/p>\n
All these measures are described as pressure intended to force the Cuban government to change the current leadership, on the same path that allegedly took place in Venezuela. But does Trump truly need military intervention in Cuba, like the operation in Venezuela that was dubbed \u201cOperation Al Ubique\u201d and that led to the arrest of Venezuela\u2019s former president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife? I believe the submission of the Cuban government, at least at present, is unlikely enough to deter a military operation. For this reason, the Cuban government condemned the U.S. threats, considered them a pretext for a possible invasion, and distributed what became known as \u201cThe Family Guide for Protection Against Military Aggression.\u201d It urged the Cuban people to prepare first aid and ready themselves for possible air attacks by the United States.<\/p>\n
In the end, some may wonder: what does Trump want from Cuba? The answer is simple. Cuba, described by Columbus as \u201cthe most beautiful land the human eye has ever seen\u201d, holds real estate and resorts overlooking Havana\u2019s shores, as well as industrial capacities and rural farms. These are the advantages and the true reasons behind a potential U.S. invasion, whether achieved through a military operation or through a \u201csoft\u201d change of power. It also fulfills the U.S. administration\u2019s imperial ambitions and its aspirations in the Western Hemisphere, goals that are clearly stated in the U.S. National Security Strategy issued in December 2025.<\/p>\n
